What is GEDCOM?
GEDCOM is an acronym for GEneological Data COMmunication.
It is a computer file format that allows genealogy data to be transferred easily from one computer system or program to another.
GEDCOM files are in the form of ASCII (i.e. text), usually with the extension .GED.
Most computer genealogy programs have the ability to import and export data in GEDCOM format.
How do I create and send my GEDCOM file?
Use your genealogy program to open up your family history file.
The program should have an option to "Export to GEDCOM", or something similar. Select this option.
Your program will now save a copy of your genealogy data as a GEDCOM file. Send this GEDCOM file (as an Email Attachment) to gedcom@genealogysleuth.co.uk
(NOTE: Do NOT copy the GEDCOM file text into the body of the email, otherwise the data may be corrupted.)
Choose the desired file format, font, font size, and attributes (e.g. Bold, Italic) for your family tree images, and put this information in the email. Most popular file formats are supported.
If your program does not allow you to "Export to GEDCOM",
contact enquiries@genealogysleuth.co.uk for assistance.
